Home How to Clean a Carpet

We all know that general wear and tear can really take its toll on your carpets, which is why a deep clean with a steam carpet cleaner is essential in any home cleaning routine. Firstly, preparation is the key to successfully cleaning your carpets. Be sure to read the machine operating guidelines before use and ensure you have all the required accessories, such as cleaning liquid and cleaner attachments.

To prepare the area to be cleaned, run over the carpet first with a vacuum cleaner to remove any loose dirt and debris, which may hinder the cleaning process. If you are sensitive to allergens, be sure to use a micro filter vacuum, which will prevent you inhaling them.

Step 2

Once you have completed the vacuuming, prepare your carpet cleaner for use by filling the water tank and adding the recommended volume of cleaning liquid as per the machine guide. Turn the machine on and start cleaning the carpet in 1 sqm blocks, with overlapping brush strokes to ensure maximum steam penetration.

Step 3

Lift the cleaning head of the unit, whilst releasing the trigger at the end of each brush stroke to fill the cleaning nozzle with water. Then repeat over the same area again, without squeezing the trigger to suck up the dirty water collected by the head.

Step 4

Repeat this process over the dirty carpet, until the water that passes through the cleaning head is clear. This is a sign that the ingrained dirt has been removed.

Cleaning Upholstery

Although carpets are commonly cleaned using this method, why not consider giving your upholstery a spring clean too? This can be achieved with an integrated steam vacuum cleaner, which is suitable for upholstery like sofas, chair seat covers and pillows. In a similar fashion to cleaning carpets, be sure to give your upholstery a once over with a vacuum cleaner and then attach the specific upholstery attachment as recommended in the instruction manual. Move the cleaning attachment over the fabric slowly to draw out the dirt away in the water. Allow the item to dry for a few hours to ensure no further staining of the material.
